L00290 Research on the Properties of Line Pipe
The general objective of the PRC Line Pipe Research program from 1953 to 1962 has been to obtain the highest quality pipe possible within economic limits. The results of research conducted during this nine year period was presented to at an industry seminar in March 1961. This report provides documentation of the presentations provided at the seminar. It is designed to acquaint the pipeline engineer with the research that was carried out and the results obtained to date. The scope of the study includes the following: the basic fracture mechanics in steel, investigation of the effect of manufacturing variables on pipe properties, full-scale fracture characteristics, and development of laboratory tests for indicating performance characteristics. Also included in the program are several new types of high-strength line pipe.
