New equipment for induction preheating offers the possibility of achieving excellent levels of control together with high thermal efficiency, rapid response, and minimal disruption of accessibility to the weld joint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe objective of this project was to develop guidelines for preheating welds made onto in-service pipelines and determine the capabilities and limitations of methods of applying preheat using equipment suitable for in-service applications. Field trial experiments were carried out on a 34-in. (863.6-mm) diameter Ã— 0.281-in. (7.1-mm) wall thickness crude oil pipeline to compare the performance of induction preheating and flame preheating under actual in-service conditions. In general, induction heating was found to be much more effective than flame heating. The field trial produced some interesting insights into preheating for in-service welding applications in general and the use of induction heating for this purpose in particular.
