Among the factors that affect the susceptibility of line-pipe steel to stress-corrosion cracking, the amount of deformation involved in forming and expanding the pipe and subsequent exposure to elevated temperatures during coating operations or service are particularly important. Many of the laboratory experiments presently being conducted at Battelle and at the University of Newcastle are directed toward determining how various combinations of mechanical and thermal processing affect the susceptibility and toward obtaining an understanding of the phenomenon. The objective of the experiments is to develop methods for treating line pipe in the future to maximize its resistance to stress-corrosion cracking.
