PR-186-184508-R01 Post-Heating as an Alternative to Delayed Nondestructive Examination

$250.00

The objective of this work was to validate the use of post-heating as an alternative to the delay time prior to NDE and develop guidance for the application of post-heat. Allowing hydrogen to quickly diffuse away significantly reduces the probability of cracking and immediate inspection can be justified. This project involved a review of previous work relevant to this topic. An experimental program was carried out in an effort to determine the hydrogen diffusion rate in steel pipe materials, as well as the typical weld hydrogen levels in both a baseline (room temperature) and time and temperature conditions. Finally, various heating methods were evaluated and guidance material and recommendations for industry standards improvement were developed.
