Pump station efficiency improvement is more complicated and specialized than simply following the latest industry trends. Liquids pipelines are different in many ways from comparable pumping environments. The pumps and electrical equipment are larger than in typical utilities, the stations on a pipeline are spaced out geographically over large parts of the country making maintenance and control more challenging. Much of what is researched and written is not applicable to the scale of liquid hydrocarbon pipelines, therefore, this report is unique in its examination of the factors that affect pump station efficiency and operating costs. Many practical and accessible means to improve pump station efficiency and reduce the cost of pumping liquid hydrocarbon are presented.
